Aligning five data teams with a data governance framework

Kabam, a data-rich SaaS video gaming company, faced significant operational challenges due to its decentralized data structure. Five distinct data teams—Game Data Analytics, Data Science, Digital Marketing Analytics, Central Tech, and Business Intelligence—operated independently, reporting to different leaders. This fragmentation led to frequent report failures, conflicting information due to logic misalignment, and the absence of a unified version of the truth, creating inefficiencies and decision-making obstacles.

To resolve these issues, Sven led the development of a corporate data governance framework to unify data management across the organization. He organized and facilitated workshops with managers from all five teams to define governance principles, roles, and processes, including incident and change management. The outcomes of these sessions were presented to an executive steering committee, culminating in the creation of a comprehensive Data Governance Playbook. This playbook established centralized data engineering, introduced a data dictionary, implemented data quality management processes, and formed a governance council.

The unified framework aligned the five data teams under a single governance structure, significantly improving cross-team collaboration and communication. While the company lacked baseline metrics for incident reporting, anecdotal evidence indicated fewer data-related issues and smoother incident handling post-implementation. This initiative showcased how Finance BI enhances FP&A by collaborating with technical departments to address data quality challenges, enabling better decision-making, and ensuring reliable, consistent insights across the organization.
